Kafue National Park Safaris

A leopard in Kafue National Park
Kafue is Zambia’s oldest game park - and also the largest!

It was proclaimed in 1950 and encompasses over 22 400 square kilometers. The park is a raw and diverse slice of African wilderness with excellent game viewing, bird watching and fishing opportunities.

Key highlights are...

  • Oldest park in Zambia
  • Very remote
  • Excellent Lion population
  • Very large – 22500 sq km
  • Nearly 500 species of birds

From the spectacular Busanga Plains in the northern section of the Kafue Park to the wilderness and the lush dambos (seasonally waterlogged depressions linked to water courses) of the south, the park sustains huge herds of a great diversity of wildlife.

Thousands of red lechwe inhabit the plains, the ubiquitous puku, sable and roan antelope in the woodland to the diminutive oribi and duiker. The defassa waterbuck, tsessebe, hartebeest, zebra and buffalo make for a wide range of antelope.

Bird watching on the rivers and the dambos is superb, with wattled crane, purple crested loerie and Pel’s fishing owl often spotted.

The Kafue and Lunga Rivers offer excellent fishing opportunities, especially good bream, barbel and fresh water pike.

The wealth of game on the plains is a big attraction for lions and prides of up to twenty are spotted regularly. Solitary Cheetah and Leopard are also prime predators that are frequently viewed.
